President Donald Trump weighed in on the unexpected death of Alexei Navalny, writing in a post on Truth Social on Monday that the situation has made him “more and more aware of what is happening in our Country.”
Navalny was an intense political enemy of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a controversial figure who was perhaps best known for speaking out against corruption within Russian politics.
According to Reuters, Navalny mysteriously perished at the IK-3 penal colony of the Arctic Circle, where he was serving out a decades-long prison sentence.
Per the Associated Press, Navalny stated on the heels of a conviction of “extremism” that he understood that he was “serving a life sentence, which is measured by the length of my life or the length of life of this regime.”
Navalny’s sentencing and mysterious death are seen by some as similar to the political persecution that has been leveled against President Donald Trump, who is the leader of the United States opposition party to Joe Biden’s administration.
Regardless of Navalny’s political stances, the parallel has been staunchly drawn by some who see similarities between Russia’s handling of political opposition and how the radical left has handled the perceived threat of Donald Trump in the polls amid his widely supported reelection bid.
Trump explained in his statement that Navalny’s death was a reminder of what was happening in America.
He wrote, “It is a slow, steady progression, with CROOKED, Radical Left Politicians, Prosecutors, and Judges leading us down a path to destruction. Open Borders, Rigged Elections, and Grossly Unfair Courtroom Decisions are DESTROYING AMERICA. WE ARE A NATION IN DECLINE, A FAILING NATION! MAGA2024[.]”
Navalny’s cause of death has, to this point, been identified as “sudden death syndrome,” which has drawn intense scrutiny. Reuters described it as a “vague term for different cardiac syndromes that cause sudden cardiac arrest and death.”
