President Trump is ramping up the pressure for Ukraine to agree to a peace deal with Russia and end the military conflict between the two countries. According to administration officials, President Volodymyr Zelensky has been given a short timeline to accept a U.S. proposal that would provide security guarantees in exchange for Ukraine ceding territory to Russia. President Trump is reportedly seeking an agreement from Zelensky by Christmas.
President Zelensky expressed a similar understanding of the situation to European leaders. Zelensky said he was pressed by members of the Trump administration, including Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to make a quick decision.
“The Americans are looking for a compromise today,” Zelensky told reporters. He expressed his hesitance to agree to a deal without first consulting with other European leaders and gaining their support for the proposal. He also stated that Ukraine’s goal is to receive strong security guarantees from the U.S. before agreeing to cede any territory to Russia.
President Trump spoke about the situation in an interview with Politico on Monday, and did not hold back in his characterization of Zelensky and the need to reach a peace deal as quickly as possible. “He’s gonna have to get on the ball and start accepting things,” Trump said. “He’s losing.”
Officials within the administration have denied trying to push Ukraine into an unfavorable deal, insisting they are seeking a resolution acceptable to both countries. According to members of the administration, the points of ongoing negotiation include which territories will be ceded to Russia, whether Ukraine will be eligible to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and whether Russian resources in Western Europe can be used to fund reconstruction efforts in Ukraine.
Despite his hesitance to agree to a proposal too quickly, President Zelensky has attempted to reassure negotiators that he does want to work with America to reach a resolution. In a post on X on Tuesday, he reaffirmed his commitment to achieving a peace deal.
“We are working very actively on all components of potential steps toward ending the war. The Ukrainian and European components are now more developed, and we are ready to present them to our partners in the U.S. Together with the American side, we expect to swiftly make the potential steps as doable as possible,” Zelensky said. “We are committed to a real peace and remain in constant contact with the United States. And, as our partners in the negotiating teams rightly note, everything depends on whether Russia is ready to take effective steps to stop the bloodshed and prevent the war from reigniting. In the near future, we will be ready to send the refined documents to the United States. Glory to Ukraine!”
