President Donald Trump announced that former Virginia Republican Senate candidate Hung Cao will serve as the undersecretary of the Navy.
Trump shared the update in a post to his Truth Social account on Thursday night.
“I am pleased to announce that Hung Cao will be our next United States Under Secretary of the Navy. Hung is the embodiment of the American Dream. As a refugee to our Great Nation, Hung worked tirelessly to make proud the Country that gave his family a home,” Trump wrote.
“He went to our amazing United States Naval Academy, and later earned his Master’s Degree in Physics. Hung served in combat as a Special Operations Officer for twenty five years. With Hung’s experience both in combat, and in the Pentagon, he will get the job done. Congratulations to Hung, and his wonderful family!” he added.
Cao previously ran against Virginia Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine. During a debate, Cao’s remarks turned viral for speaking out against diversity initiatives in the military.
“Those are young men and women that are going to win wars,” Cao said during the debate. “When you’re using a drag queen to recruit for the Navy, that’s not the people we want.”
Cao also posted his reaction to Trump’s statement on Thursday.
“Thank you, Mr. President. It’s time to get to work,” he wrote.
The newly nominated undersecretary also recently spoke out in support of Trump’s Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in another post.
“Our military should be concentrating on warfighting capabilities and capacity, not wasting resources on DEI and climate agendas. @PeteHegseth is getting our priorities straight,” Cao wrote.
Cao’s nomination will require Senate approval. So far, Trump is 20-0 in the Senate with Cabinet members and has quickly moved forward with his leadership team.
Jamieson Greer was approved 56-43 to become the United States Trade Representative on Wednesday, with five Democrats supporting his bid and only one Republican, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) opposing him.
