West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin announced Thursday he will not seek reelection for 2024, allowing Republicans to possibly pick up a seat by a Trump-endorsed candidate.
Manchin, 76, opened up about his decision “after months of deliberation and long conversations” with his family, noting that he believes he has accomplished what he “set out to do” for the state.
“I believe in my heart of hearts that I have accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia,” Manchin stated, according to AP News.
“I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for re-election to the United States Senate, but what I will be doing is traveling the country and speaking out to see if there is an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring Americans together,” Manchin continued.
Following the West Virginia senators announcement former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social stating that he believes it is “looking good” for former Gov. Jim Justice.
“Because I Endorsed Big Jim Justice of West Virginia for the U.S. Senate, and he has taken a commanding lead, Democrat Joe Manchin has decided not to seek re-election. Looking good for Big Jim!” Trump stated.
Former West Virginia Republican Gov. Justice served two consecutive terms and was hugely popular among Republicans.
Reports of reasons for Manchin stepping down have not been confirmed. However, some reports included rumors of the senator possibly placing his name in the 2024 presidential line-up, possibly as an independent candidate, according to AP News.
