President Donald Trump kicked off the start of his April 2 tariff policy by celebrating with a post on Truth Social, stating, “It’s Liberation Day in America!”
United States Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent confirmed in his recent interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, that for the first time in decades, “We’re going to see fair trade.”
He noted that all nations will have the option to lower their tariffs, lower non-tariff barriers, and end currency manipulation, labor subsidies, and cheap loans, to “make the global trading system fair for American workers again.”
Bessent reminded viewers that Trump won the 2024 election with overwhelming support and now, “He’s doing what he promised he would do.”
Former White House member, Derrick Evans, posted a clip of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt discussing unfair tariff rates on C-SPAN 2. She listed multiple “unfair trade practices,” including India’s 100 percent tariff on American agricultural products, Canada’s 300 percent tariff on American butter and cheese, and Japan’s 700 percent tariff on American rice.
“These countries have been ripping off our country for far too long,” she declared.
Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., supported Trump’s incoming tariff policy during an appearance on Fox Business, noting, “He’s going to make some serious moves if, if these countries do not treat our products fairly.”
Smith went on to explain that two-thirds of U.S. exporters pay higher tariffs than other countries across 132 nations trading 600,000 products.
“That is unacceptable. That is not a level playing field. That is not free and fair trade,” he concluded.
President Trump’s tariff policy isn’t just designed to ensure fair trade practices for American companies and workers, it is also meant to combat the fentanyl crisis.
His February Memorandum on Canada, Mexico, and China imposes a 25 percent additional tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, with a 10 percent additional tariff on Chinese imports to encourage these nations to crack down on the illegal fentanyl drug smuggling trade.
President Trump campaigned on ending the fentanyl crisis and implementing fair trade practices with reciprocal tariffs. Both are being heavily addressed as of April 2.
