President Donald Trump celebrated the resignation of Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., in a statement posted to Truth Social this week, highlighting the possibility of filling the seat with a “REAL Senator” who would represent the people of the Cornhusker State.
“Great new for the United States Senate, and our Country itself,” Trump wrote. “Liddle’ Ben Sasse, the lightweight Senator from the great State of Nebraska, will be resigning. If he knew he was going to resign so early in his term, why did he run in the first place? But it’s still great news! The University of Florida will soon regret their decision to hire him as their President….”
Sasse was elected to serve in the U.S. Senate in 2014 and won reelection in 2020. According to a report from the Daily Caller, he was one of several Republican senators who voted to impeach President Donald Trump in 2021 following the Jan. 6 “riot” at the U.S. Capitol.
In a February 2021 statement, Sasse stated that he voted to convict Trump because of the 45th president’s claims that election fraud permeated the 2020 election, and that “political violence” and so-called “tribalism” had incited a situation that was “close to a bloody constitutional crisis.”
As previously reported by RSBN, GOP primary voters have strongly rejected members of the House who voted to impeach Trump, and Sasse’s senatorial conviction vote has not earned him any popularity points with pro-Trump conservatives in Nebraska.
Per the Daily Caller, Sasse will be pursuing a role as University of Florida’s new president.
President Trump continued in his statement, “…We have enough weak and ineffective RINOs in our midst. I look forward to working with the terrific Republican Party of Nebraska to get a REAL Senator to represent the incredible People of that State, not another Fake RINO!”
