President Donald Trump continued his ongoing criticisms of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with a Christmas Day post suggesting NHL hockey great Wayne Gretzky should run for the position.
Trump shared the comments in a Truth Social post after reportedly meeting with Gretzky.
“I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One’ as he is known in Ice Hockey circles. I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada – You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign,’” he wrote.
“He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement. It would be so much fun to watch!” Trump added.
As RSBN previously reported, Trump jokingly referred to Trudeau as the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada” on social media following their recent meeting at Mar-a-Lago.
Trump posted the comments on his Truth Social account after teasing that Canada could become the 51st state during their face-to-face meeting.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada. I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!” Trump wrote.
Fox News reported that Trudeau said during his meeting with Trump that tariffs would kill the Canadian economy.
“Trump then suggested to Trudeau that Canada become the 51st state, which caused the prime minister and others to laugh nervously, sources told Fox News,” the outlet reported.
“But he continued, telling Trudeau that prime minister is a better title, though he could still be governor of the 51st state,” it continued.
Trump previously wrote that he plans to impose tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China on his first day in office.
“As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before. Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border. On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump wrote.
