In a surprising turn of events, the American Civil Liberties Union has submitted a motion in support of President Trump after a gag order was imposed on him.

Historically, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has gone against President Trump until now.

On Oct. 17, U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan imposed a gag order against President Trump at the request of prosecutor Jack Smith, whom President Trump recently slammed. As reported by the New York Post, this gag order prevents President Trump from making any statements about Smith, the judge and the case itself, effectively limiting his right to speak.

President Trump responded to this on Truth Social by writing, “RADICAL LEFT JUDGE TAKING AWAY MY RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH IN ORDER TO HELP CROOKED JOE BIDEN & HIS THIRD WORLD ELECTION INTERFERENCE SCAM. AS GOOD AS THIS SOUNDS, IT WON’T WORK!”

Now, the ACLU, which had previously filed 400 legal actions against President Trump in the past, has announced its support for his First Amendment rights.

Shared as a press release on their website, Anthony D. Romero, who is the executive director of the union, said: “As much as we disagreed with Donald Trump’s policies, everyone is entitled to the same First Amendment protection against gag orders that are too broad and too vague.”

The ACLU has argued that the gag order is too broad and will include issues that are relevant to the 2024 elections, which is election interference.

Romero further explained why the ACLU, which usually supports far-left causes, is now supporting President Trump. He said, “if we allow his free speech rights to be abridged, we know that other unpopular voices — even ones we agree with — will also be silenced.”

The motion argues that the gag order is a violation of President Trump’s First Amendment rights.
