A new poll shows some encouraging news for President Donald Trump in the state of Washington. According to April research from the Bullfinch Group, Trump is polling at 46 percent compared to 45 percent for Joe Biden.

The number represents a better showing in Washington than any Republican has obtained in decades. A Republican presidential candidate has not won the state since 1984.

The polling data aligns with trends showing Trump doing better than average in the state. Polls from earlier in the year have shown a steady rise in Trump’s support. Although Washington has typically been a reliably blue state, the data may align with other trends seen so far. In a head-to-head matchup, Trump has been outpolling Biden nationally by six points.

In addition, the potential voters polled held a higher opinion of Trump’s presidency than of Biden’s.

It is difficult to predict how national trends will play out in the electoral map on election day. However, national trends appear to be holding strong for Trump in crucial swing states as well. Trump has consistently outperformed Biden in the seven swing states that will be essential to winning the presidency in November.

With the election six months away, the race is still likely to tighten, and polling data will inevitably shift. The polling data from Washington state is still significant, especially considering the results from the previous presidential election.

In 2020, Joe Biden won the state of Washington by nearly 20 percentage points. A tightening in the divide between the two candidates may be an encouraging signal for the Trump campaign that even voters in blue states are ready for a change.
