President Donald Trump has endorsed Republican Katie Britt for U.S. Senate over GOP Rep. Mo Brooks for Alabama’s hotly contested runoff later this month.
Trump previously endorsed Brooks but withdrew his support earlier this year after the congressman went “woke,” as Trump put it. Brooks drew criticism from the 45th president after he told attendees of Trump’s Alabama rally last year to move past the 2020 presidential election.
“There are some people who are despondent about the voter fraud and election theft in 2020,” Brooks told rally attendees. “Folks, put that behind you, put that behind you,” added Brooks, whose comments were immediately met with boos.
Trump withdrew his support of Brooks shortly thereafter and pledged to endorse someone else.
On Friday, Trump officially gave his support to Britt, the former chief of staff to retiring GOP Sen. Richard Shelby.
“Katie Strongly Supports our under siege Second Amendment, Stands Up for Parental Rights, and Will Fight for our Military, our Vets, and Election Integrity,” Trump wrote of Britt via his Save America PAC.
Trump also called the Senate hopeful a “fearless America First Warrior” who “will never let you down.”
Brooks tweeted his disapproval of the 45th president’s endorsement, writing that “Donald Trump is the only man in American politics who could get conned by Mitch McConnell twice in an Alabama Senate race.”
Britt and Brooks will face off again in the state’s Republican Senate runoff after both candidates placed within the top two spots of Alabama’s Senate primary results from May 24.
A candidate must receive at least 50 percent of the vote to secure their party’s nomination to the general election. Britt had garnered nearly 45 percent to Brook’s 29.2 percent as of May.
The winner will face off against Democrat Will Boyd in November.
