President Donald Trump has taken nearly a six-point lead over President Joe Biden among Hispanic voters, a new survey shows.
A recent poll conducted by the New York Times/Siena College on Feb. 25 to 28 found that out of 980 registered voters nationwide, 46 percent of Hispanics stated they would vote for Trump in the 2024 presidential election if they were voting today.
Comparatively, only 40 percent of Hispanic voters stated they would vote for Biden, which is a massive shift among Hispanic voters from the 2020 general election.
During the 2020 general election, Biden notably won 59 percent of the Hispanic vote, verses Trump receiving just 38 percent, according to Fox News.
The United States has seen a rise among Hispanic voters since the last general election, jumping up nearly 12 percent, according to a recent Pew Research study. It is estimated that roughly 36.2 million Hispanic voters are eligible to Casta. ballot this year, which is up from the 32.3 million within 2020, data showed.
“Latinos have grown at the second-fastest rate of any major racial and ethnic group in the U.S. electorate since the last presidential election,” the study stated. “Every year, about 1.4 million Hispanics in the U.S. become eligible to vote.”
As Trump appears to be rising within the minority group, some have claimed that his favorability is due to the Democrats view of the group as “oppressed victims,” additionally noting Trump’s leading policies that allowed the U.S. to flourish. Texas Republican Rep. Monica de la Cruz released an opinion piece for Newsweek on Feb. 29, stating that her community has seen a plummet in Democrat voters.
“In my community of Hidalgo County, Texas, where Hispanics make up over 90 percent of the population, primary early vote figures point to a political earthquake: Republican turnout has skyrocketed by 48 percent since 2020, while Democratic participation has plummeted by 34 percent,” she stated.
De la Cruz claimed that the Democrat party is “at odds” with the Hispanic cultural values and noted that under the Trump administration many Hispanic saw a flourish within the economy that allowed them to prosper within the U.S.
“After years of a sluggish economy following the housing crisis, Hispanics saw an economic resurgence under the Trump administration. Before the pandemic, Hispanic unemployment hit record lows, the Latino poverty rate dropped dramatically, and we led the nation in the creation of new small businesses while our border security was the strongest it had ever been,” de la Cruz continued.
The Texas representative highlighted the concern many Hispanics have had over the ongoing southern border crisis as states like Texas, California, and Arizona have suffered from a massive number of illegal immigrants crossing under the Biden administration.
Trump recently visited Eagle Pass, Texas to show his support for the Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has the state and federal government have legally battled over the town’s border restrictions. The 45th president released a video of his recent visit and called out Biden’s “open border policies.”
“Every day Joe Biden is giving aid and comfort to the foreign enemies of the United States. Three years ago we were more respected than ever before and now they have no respect for us whatsoever. On day one of my administration I will terminate every open border policy of the Biden administration and we will begin the largest domestic deportation operation in American history,” Trump stated.
