President Donald Trump on Thursday suggested the Republican Party could hold a national convention ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, a move that would be unusual outside of a presidential campaign year.

“The Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN. We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

The president said his administration’s progress and fundraising success may warrant a gathering to unify Republicans before voters head to the polls.

“We have raised far more money than the Democrats, and are having a great time fixing all of the Country Destroying mistakes made by the Biden Administration, and watching the USA heal and prosper. The results are incredible, a record pace!!! In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!! DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” he wrote.

Trump’s approval rating remains below 45 percent, according to analyst Nate Silver. Historically, the party in power tends to lose congressional seats during midterm elections, though some Democrats warn that Republicans may be less vulnerable than in past cycles.

“Yet, while the Democrats may do well in 2026, it is unlikely that they will have anywhere near the level of success that the out-of-power party has had in previous midterm elections with such an unpopular incumbent president,” former Clinton adviser Doug Sosnik wrote in Politico this week.

Democrats have also considered holding a national convention of their own to consolidate support for their candidates as they aim to retake the House and limit Trump’s second-term agenda. Redistricting fights in multiple states are also expected to shape the balance of power in Congress and add uncertainty to the midterm outlook.

Republican National Committee (RNC) chair Kiersten Pels told Fox News Digital after the announcement that the president “is leading with bold, innovative ideas to energize our Party and keep us on the path to victory.”
