During his speech at the National Religious Broadcasters Presidential Forum in Nashville, President Donald Trump pledged to protect faith, and specifically the nation’s motto, “In God We Trust.”
He stated, “In God We Trust. We will never change that motto.”
Trump also noted a growing lack of support for religious rights, explaining “There are many many people that want to change that motto.”
Freedom of religion has been a fundamental American value since the birth of the nation. This right is backed by the U.S. Constitution (First Amendment) and federal law. Interestingly, the PEW Research Center reported in 2022 that Americans identifying as atheist, agnostic, or “nothing in particular” has been increasing since the 1990s.
Just this month, the PEW Research Center also reported that a whopping 94 percent of atheists believe that “religion causes division and intolerance.” This negative view of Americans’ right to worship could be what Trump was referring to when he stated that there were “many people that want to change that motto.”
Respected psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson argued in his book, “12 Rules for Life,” that without a moral compass (often supplied by a religious connection), individuals turn to nihilism and grow miserable.
According to the Sutherland Institute, religion aids children in getting good grades and completing their education. The Institute for Family Studies also published findings that link religion to positive mental health outcomes.
During his CPAC speech Thursday, Dr. Ben Carson also spoke of a need for American faith to aid the success of the nation in the face of current struggles, per RSBN.
President Trump’s new pledge to protect the country’s motto reaffirms his commitment to standing up for religious freedom and the American-born philosophy of “In God We Trust,” a motto that he called “magnificent.”
