President Trump took aim again at his closest presidential primary rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, saying that the former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would destroy him. Christie is expected to launch his bid for the White House this week.
In a statement from MAGA Inc., Trump published a quote from his spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, who said that DeSantis’s “spiraling” campaign would result in Christie “eating DeSantis’ lunch.”
“Ron DeSantis’ campaign is spiraling, and President Trump’s dominance over the Republican primary field has opened a mad rush to seize the mantle for runner-up,” Trump’s statement read.
He continued, “Ron DeSantis is not ready for this moment, and Chris Christie will waste no time eating DeSantis’ lunch.”
Chris Christie once served as a popular two-term Republican governor in the blue state of New Jersey. However, he fell from grace following scandals such as “Bridgegate” in 2013, leaving office with a 15 percent approval rating in 2018.
Christie is expected to launch his second bid for president on Tuesday. He ran for president in 2016 but suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump following a poor performance in New Hampshire.
The former governor is known for his brash, attacking debate style, famously ripping Florida Sen. Marco Rubio during a 2016 presidential primary debate over his “memorized 30-second speeches” that he continually repeated.
However, he faces an uphill battle against his fellow primary contenders. Currently, a Christie 2024 bid is backed by just one percent of Republicans, according to the latest primary poll from Echelon Insights.
