President Donald Trump reacted on Friday to the news of former White House official Peter Navarro’s conviction by a federal jury in Washington, D.C., in relation to the events of Jan. 6, 2021.

On Truth Social, the president wrote, “I can’t believe that these Fascist Monsters have so viciously gone after the great Peter Navarro for defying the totally partisan January 6th Unselect Committee of political Hacks and Thugs, who refused to go after Crazy Nancy Pelosi, and the reasons she and the Mayor of D.C. REJECTED 10,000 soldiers, which would have easily stopped any future security problem.”

He added, “His testimony wouldn’t have mattered, anyway, because the ‘Committee’ QUICKLY and ILLEGALLY DELETED & DESTROYED ALL EVIDENCE & FINDINGS!”

According to Axios, Navarro was convicted of contempt for Congress after defying a congressional subpoena from the Jan. 6 Committee that demanded he appear before them earlier this year.

Navarro announced the news himself on X, writing, “Guilty. I’m doing my duty to God, country, the Constitution, and my commander-in-chief. Standing tall thanks for your prayers.”

Ahead of his conviction, Navarro gave regular updates about his case on X

President Trump alleged, “There was MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, evidence and findings that the Unselect Committee DID NOT WANT SEEN.”

Per NBC, Navarro’s conviction was on two counts of contempt. One count was for refusing to testify in front of the Jan. 6 Committee, and the second count was for failing to produce documents that were subpoenaed by the panel.

Trump explained that “deleted and destroyed evidence is a big part of my defense, and the defense of many others” and called for those who allegedly deleted this evidence to be “prosecuted” instead of Navarro.

He also noted that Navarro was the “single greatest trade negotiator against China” during the Trump administration. “Only China is celebrating the Navarro conviction!” he concluded.

Navarro will face sentencing in January 2024, according to Axios.
