President Donald Trump shared some honest feedback on Sunday after watching the Super Bowl halftime show, labeling the performance by popstar Rihanna as an “EPIC FAIL.”
The president posted his comments to Truth Social, writing, “Rihanna gave, without question, the single worst Halftime Show in Super Bowl history – This after insulting far more than half of our Nation, which is already in serious DECLINE, with her foul and insulting language.”
He added, “Also, so much for her ‘Stylist!’”
Sunday’s Super Bowl heralded the victory of the Kansas City Chiefs over the Philadelphia Eagles. The big game was held in Glendale, Arizona, prompting conservative superstar and GOP gubernatorial candidate in the Grand Canyon State, Kari Lake, to attend the game.
Lake made headlines for her decision to remain seated during a rendition of the “Black National Anthem” that preceded the U.S. National Anthem, which was performed by Chris Stapleton.
Lake responded to a photo of her sitting for the alternative “national anthem” with a simple statement on Twitter: “I’m just here for THE National Anthem[.]”
The NFL has become increasingly politicized over the past decade as some players have often opted to use their platform on national television to show their support for groups like “Black Lives Matter.” A 2020 article from the Daily Mail noted that conservative Americans’ distaste for the NFL began growing in 2016 when San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee for the National Anthem.
In 2017, President Donald Trump slammed several NFL players who chose to kneel during the National Anthem, stating on Twitter: “Many people booed the players who kneeled yesterday (which was a small percentage of total). These are fans who demand respect for our Flag!”
He also added, “The issue of kneeling has nothing to do with race. It is about respect for our Country, Flag and National Anthem. NFL must respect this!”
