New York’s highest court has denied President Donald Trump’s request to reschedule Friday’s sentencing.
USA Today reported that the New York court had refused to halt or reschedule the court hearing where the sentencing for the “hush money” case is set to take place.
Back in May last year, a 12-person jury had decided that President Trump had falsified business records 34 times to cover up so-called hush payments made to Stormy Daniels in 2016.
President Trump has called out the case for being nothing more than a weaponization of the Justice Department. He slammed the Justice Department and the judges on Truth Social, saying, “I never falsified business records. It is a fake, made up charge by a corrupt judge who is just doing the work of the Biden/Harris Injustice Department, an attack on their political opponent, ME!”
On Wednesday, President Trump had an eleventh-hour request to pause the sentencing. According to ABC News, that same day, President Trump made a request to the U.S. Supreme Court to halt the sentencing, as he explained that Manhattan Judge Juan Merchan did not have the authority to sentence him until the appeals court ruled on his argument. He is still waiting for their decision.
In response to President Trump’s request, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had urged the U.S. Supreme Court to reject the request as he felt the Supreme Court had no need to intervene.
USA Today shared that President Trump cited “the extraordinarily demanding task of preparing to assume the Executive power of the United States” as another reason why the sentencing should halt.
In response, Merchan ruled that President Trump can attend the sentencing remotely on January 10 to minimize the physical and mental demands during his presidential transition period. ABC News reported that Merchan had signaled that he may sentence President Trump to unconditional discharge.
President Trump called out the sham case and the upcoming sentencing by revealing the absurdity of the ruling, saying, “Every legal scholar of note said there IS NO CASE AGAINST ME. The judge should be disbarred! This is why people, and companies, are FLEEING New York – A corrupt court system.”
