The Department of Justice (DOJ) dropped a legal hammer on California this week, targeting a regulation that increases the cost of eggs, poultry, and pork for hardworking Americans.

The lawsuit, which names radical Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom and the state’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, zeros in on a 2018 proposition that slapped strict rules on raising chickens, pigs and calves for anyone vying to sell in California’s massive agricultural market.

“Through a combination of voter initiatives, legislative enactments, and regulations, California has effectively prevented farmers across the country from using a number of agricultural production methods which were in widespread use – and which helped keep eggs affordable,” the lawsuit states.

This move coincides with President Trump’s America First agenda to tackle the high cost of living for Americans, as outlined in his Day One executive order.

The lawsuit follows the President’s early July celebration of bringing down the cost of eggs. “We brought the price of Eggs back to what they were supposed to be,” he remarked in response to Waffle House’s announcement of removing surcharges from eggs.

The price of eggs peaked in March at an average of $8.17 a dozen but has since gone down to $2.54.

The lawsuit argues that California’s rule is an attempt to override the Eggs Products Inspection Act of 1970, which sets a clear federal standard for egg products.

“Americans across the country have suffered the consequences of liberal policies causing massive inflation for everyday items like eggs,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we will use the full extent of federal law to ensure that American families are free from oppressive regulatory burdens and restore American prosperity.”

According to a recent report from the Center for the Environment and Welfare, the rules are unpopular among Californians. Powerful anti-meat activists were behind the proposition, including Mercy for Animals, the Center for Biological Diversity, and Humane World for Animals.

Since the proposition’s enactment in 2022, pork has gone up 20 percent, and eggs have skyrocketed to $10 a dozen in California.

“The United States thus seeks a declaration invalidating and permanently enjoining the enforcement of certain provisions of California law that violate the Supremacy Clause and have raised the price of eggs and egg products for American families,” the lawsuit reads.
