In a Truth Social post, President-elect Donald Trump announced that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a “very good” telephone call on Friday morning.

The phone call was the first time Trump had spoken with Xi since his historic victory in November, according to Reuters.

“I just spoke to Chairman Xi Jinping of China. The call was a very good one for both China and the U.S.A. It is my expectation that we will solve many problems together, and starting immediately.” Trump wrote.

He then summarized the phone call and declared a joint effort for global stability. “We discussed balancing Trade, Fentanyl, TikTok, and many other subjects. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the World more peaceful and safe!”

According to Chinese state media CCTV, Xi said the pair hoped for a positive start to relations between the two countries.

Reuters reported that they also discussed Xi’s concerns about Taiwan. CCTV said that Xi stated, “The Taiwan issue concerns China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and he hopes the U.S. side will handle it with caution.”

The Chinese government insists that Taiwan is part of its territory.

During his first term, Trump made clear that he supported Taiwan’s sovereignty and arms sales to the country. Amid his 2024 campaign, Trump remarked that Taiwan should pay for the United States’ protection.

Trump intends to impose 10 percent duties on all U.S. imports and 60 percent on goods coming from China, according to Reuters.

On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld the law that requires ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to divest TikTok’s United States assets to an American buyer before the deadline on January 19, or else the app will be banned due to national security concerns.

Trump weighed in on the decision in another Truth Social post. “The Supreme Court decision was expected, and everyone must respect it. My decision on TikTok will be made in the not too distant future, but I must have time to review the situation. Stay tuned!” He wrote.

TikTok’s CEO testified last year that the app boasts 170 million monthly active users in the United States.
