President Donald Trump will sign an executive order targeting one of the Democratic Party’s biggest fundraising platforms to stop foreign contributions to American elections.
Politico reported that the president’s order will target ActBlue, a major Democratic political action committee, and that the decree may be issued soon.
An undisclosed source supposedly involved in the effort told Politico that the order would instruct Attorney General Pam Bondi to “investigate and take appropriate action” on allegations of groups using online fundraising platforms to donate reported “‘straw or dummy’ contributions” to generate “foreign contributions” to American political candidates, which breaks the law, according to the memo, and report the results to the president and his general counsel.
Reports of the memo were also confirmed by Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley, who wrote in a statement to X Thursday that the Democrats’ “Dark Money scam has gone on long enough,” and that “Laundering foreign money and using fake donors” to influence American elections is “illegal and unacceptable.”
Commending President Trump and Attorney General Bondi for their action, Whatley wrote that the Democrats “owe the American people an explanation,” and that they “need to be held accountable for their efforts to corrupt” U.S. elections.
If approved, the Justice Department would determine whether to file criminal charges or suits against ActBlue, which has been scrutinized for its alleged lack of fraud protections used in the 2024 presidential election, according to JustTheNews.
They also noted how agencies would have the ability to provide further protection to avoid future foreign interference in pending elections.
The House Oversight and Judiciary committees previously launched investigations into ActBlue shortly before the 2024 presidential election. According to their report, ActBlue changed its donation policies twice during the election to make its fraud-prevention rules “more lenient,” despite “extensive fraud on the platform, including from foreign sources.”
