Trump triumphs as Democrats abandon impeachment effort

Democrat Rep. Shri Thanedar’s impeachment attempt was rejected by top Democratic leaders, and three Democrats withdrew from it, leaving only one Democrat supporting the proposed impeachment.

Breitbart reported that three House Democrats removed their support from the proposed impeachment on Tuesday, including Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Kweisi Mfume (D-MD) and Robin Kelly (D-IL).

Newsweek reported that representative Pete Aguilar, the chair of the House Democratic Caucus, told reporters “Impeachment is, at times, a tool that can be used. This president is no stranger to that; he’s been impeached twice,” and added, “But we don’t have any confidence that House and Senate Republicans would do their jobs, and so this is not an exercise that we’re willing to undertake.”

On Monday, as President Trump prepared to celebrate his historic 100 days in office, Thanedar filed seven articles of impeachment against President Trump, and according to Newsweek, they accuse President Trump of supposed obstruction of justice, abuse of executive power, abuse of trade powers and international aggression, violation of First Amendment Rights, bribery, corruption, and tyrannical overreach, among other things. However, this attempt is now only supported by Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL).

In a statement obtained by The Hill, a spokesperson explained that Mfume withdrew support from the proposal saying, “Congressman Mfume removed himself as a co-sponsor from H. Res. 353 because he was made aware it was not cleared by Democratic leadership and not fully vetted legally — and he preferred to err on the side of caution.”

Kelly’s spokesperson also released a statement reported by The Hill explaining, “The Congresswoman was under the impression that the resolution was drafted and reviewed by both the House Judiciary Committee and Leadership when she originally signed on during a vote series on the floor.”

Despite only having one co-sponsor, Thanedar is determined to continue with his flimsy attempt at impeachment as Republicans celebrate all that President Trump has managed to achieve in the short time he’s been in office compared to the previous administration.
