Joe Biden will be returning to a Trump-era immigration policy as early as next week, following an announcement from October his administration would be reimplementing the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), better known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy.
The return to Trump’s immigration strategy comes on the heels of a federal court ruling from a Texas judge who ruled to reimplement the MPP.
Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy had previously ended the Obama administration’s loose immigration protocols, such as “catch-and-release,” where illegal immigrants were released into the United States with no way of tracking them, while awaiting appointed hearings in the immigration courts.
In June, Biden announced that he would be terminating the MPP, much to the dismay of proponents of border security. President Trump ripped Biden in a statement following that announcement: “The Biden Administration’s disastrous decision to formally end the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy is proof that their objective is to eliminate the U.S. border entirely and flood the country with so many illegal aliens that every community is overwhelmed.”
Biden’s return to the border policy is a late response to the catastrophic border crisis that has raged all year, thanks to Biden’s elimination of the MPP and his executive order to stop construction of Trump’s long-awaited southern border wall.
According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), 1.7 million illegal migrants were encountered at the southern border this year, a record-high. In fact, the border crisis got so bad in 2021 that Gov. Greg Abbot of Texas (R), requested an emergency declaration from the White House due to the horrendous situation at the southern border. Joe Biden gave partial approval.
According to a report from Axios, there is one big difference in Biden’s soon-to-be resurrected Trump immigration plan: all adult migrants will be given the opportunity to receive a Covid-19 vaccinations before they are returned to their home country, although it won’t be required.
This bit of information likely comes as a surprise to many Americans who are losing their jobs over tyrannical vaccine mandates, with many even being denied religious exemptions. Yet, illegal immigrants are being given the freedom of medical choice, which seems flagrantly hypocritical, especially for American citizens who are faced with the prospect of unemployment over refusing the Covid shot at their place of employment.
However, this return to the “Remain in Mexico” policy is a huge win for those who have been fighting for a return to tightened border security and a reduction in the flow of illegal migrants into American communities without any type of vetting. It is, at least, a step in the right direction to restoring a semblance of order and safety at a chaotic southern border.
