President Donald Trump received a special invitation on Thursday to visit Windsor Castle and King Charles of England, marking an unprecedented gesture of goodwill from America’s allies across the pond.
During a diplomatic visit from U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House, the English leader sat with President Trump in front of the media and answered a few questions.
Importantly, Starmer pulled an envelope from his jacket, which he announced was a personal note from Kings Charles.
President Trump accepted the letter and invited the prime minister to explain it to the press.
Starmer said it was “an invitation for a second state visit – this is really special, this has never happened before and I think that just symbolizes the strength of the relationship between us.”
Starmer also called the invitation “truly historic” and said King Charles wanted to make this visit “even better” than President Trump’s first official trip.
President Trump’s first state visit to the UK was during his first term when the late Queen Elizabeth II reigned.
The prime minister asked Trump if he would accept the invitation. The president said, “The answer is yes…we look forward to being there and honoring the king and honoring, really, your country.”
Trump said the invitation included a visit to Windsor Castle, and accepted the invitation on behalf of himself and First Lady Melania Trump.
Preceding the invitation, President Trump praised his relationship with the prime minister, noting, “We’ve had a tremendous relationship and frankly, the prime minister and I have met twice before and we get along very famously, as you would say.”
In return, Starmer echoed the sentiment. “Our countries have been bound together for a very long time now…I know that together we will strengthen that even further,” he said.
