The U.S. Department of Education released a Reduction of Force statement noting that nearly half of their workforce will be reduced by March 21.
The press release described that of the current 4,133 employees, just 2,183 will be needed moving forward.
“The Department of Education will continue to deliver on all statutory programs that fall under the agency’s purview, including formula funding, student loans, Pell Grants, funding for special needs students, and competitive grantmaking,” the release went on.
Secretary of Education Linda McMahon was quoted in the release as stating, “Today’s reduction in force reflects the Department of Education’s commitment to efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that resources are directed where they matter most: to students, parents, and teachers.”
“I appreciate the work of the dedicated public servants and their contributions to the Department. This is a significant step toward restoring the greatness of the United States education system,” she added.
McMahon further explained the department’s decision during a Fox News interview with Laura Ingraham. She said, “We have to identify where the bloat is, where the bureaucracy is,” and noted the importance of ensuring that education funding goes to the states to properly fund schools.
McMahon also discussed President Trump’s plan to abolish the Department of Education entirely. “He said that my successful job will be to put myself OUT of a job. I’m working to fulfill that mandate that he gave to me. That’s the directive, but in the meantime, we want to make sure that the programs — everything that is put in place — continues to operate in a more efficient way,” she concluded.
