Gasoline prices across the United States have dropped sharply, with the White House saying that 43 states now have average pump prices below $3 per gallon, marking one of the widest periods of low fuel costs in recent years.

“Gas prices continue to plummet nationwide,” the White House wrote Monday on X. “Now FORTY-THREE U.S. states feature average gas prices under $3/gallon!”

The post included a U.S. map based on AAA data showing most states shaded red to indicate prices below $3. States with higher prices, such as Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington, were shown in gray. Of those, only Alaska and Nevada are led by Republican governors.

“Now we are breaking $1.99 a gallon,” President Trump wrote Sunday on Truth Social, referring to prices that are currently seen in a small number of states, including Oklahoma, which has the lowest average gasoline prices in the nation, according to AAA.

Trump’s post was accompanied by a photo showing gas prices in Las Vegas on July 21, 2022, when regular gasoline was listed at $5.24 per gallon. Nevada, now led by Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo, has an average price of about $3.35, according to AAA.

Nationally, the average price for regular gasoline stands at about $2.79 per gallon, according to real-time tracking data. That is the lowest national average since 2021, representing notable relief for drivers at the start of 2026.

Daily tracking shows that most Central and Southern states are well below the $3 threshold, while a smaller number of coastal and high tax states continue to post higher averages.

Industry analysts say the decline aligns with broader forecasts. GasBuddy projects the national average price of gasoline in 2026 could fall to $2.97 per gallon, marking the fourth straight year of declining annual averages. Household spending on gasoline could drop to levels last seen during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Analysts expect prices to continue trending downward through 2026, though a seasonal increase could occur. Diesel prices are also forecast to decline, though they remain higher than gasoline.
