Joe Biden announced on Monday morning that he will address the nation from the White House at 3:45 p.m. EST. Biden’s remarks follow the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul, Afghanistan.
Biden will return to the White House after vacationing at Camp David over the weekend while thousands of troops deployed to Afghanistan to evacuate American citizens from the chaotic region under siege by the Taliban.
The 46th president in April originally ordered the Pentagon to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan by Sept. 11. A date that was later moved up to Aug. 31.
Amid rising threat of violence from the Taliban, Biden told reporters last week that he does not regret this decision. Since then, Taliban forces have taken over the entire country of Afghanistan and is expected to implement an Islamic State shortly.
In an attempt to flee the country, Afghan citizens have flooded the Kabul airport in hopes of getting on a flight out. Video footage has appeared on social media showing civilians piling onto runways and climbing onto U.S. Air Force planes.
Iranian journalist and activist Masih Alinejad explained the desperate attempts to escape the country before sharia law is implemented.
“You have to be from Afghanistan or Iran to understand the fear of Islamic regimes that you prefer trying your luck and hanging onto the wheels of a military plane than living under sharia laws,” she said. “Our fear is rational.”
