President Trump on Friday said his administration would hold Canada accountable for causing a widespread dive in air quality in the U.S., accusing the neighboring nation of ruining the skies in the upper United States.
“We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!” President Trump declared in a statement posted to Truth Social.
According to The New York Times, ongoing wildfires in Canada are having a profoundly negative impact on the air quality in the Northwest and Upper Midwest areas of the United States, affecting places like the Great Lakes and New York.
“I will call the Prime Minister during the day to find out what they are going to do about it,” the president continued in his statement.
He said, “The cost is incalculable! Canada has refused to engage in basic Forest Management and Debris Removal, knowing that such refusal will lead to exactly this result. This is Willful Negligence, and becoming a yearly occurrence, costing the United States Billions of Dollars, which cost of this pollution must of necessity be added to the TARIFFS Canada is currently paying.”
The president’s comments come just after the U.S. and Canada reached an agreement that would allow the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, to open in late July, as reported by RSBN.
During a press briefing this week, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the situation, and blamed the fires on “climate change.”
“We need a contribution from Americans in the fight against climate change,” he declared, via translated statements. “…They’re against clean energy, for example, wind energy…second, Canada is maintaining its efforts globally, and the U.S. are reducing their efforts globally. So yes, climate change is everyone’s responsibility, truly everybody, including the U.S.”
