The Justice Department has issued a warning to state and local officials who refuse to comply with the immigration policies of the incoming Trump administration.

A memo regarding interim policy changes was issued by Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove on Tuesday.

In the memo, Bove addressed the immigration priorities of the new administration, including the pursuit of individuals who have ties with cartels and other criminal organizations.

Bove specifically pointed to the actions of so-called sanctuary cities and warned how they would be handled if they attempt to subvert the policies of the Trump administration.

The memo discussed the creation of the Sanctuary Cities Enforcement Working Group, and stated the purpose the newly created working group was to “identify local laws, policies, and activities, that are inconsistent with Executive Branch immigration initiatives, and where appropriate, to take legal action to challenge such laws.”

The warning comes amid promises by local leaders to defy the immigration efforts of the incoming Trump administration.

Immigration has been a signature policy issue on the agenda for Trump’s second term in office. Tom Homan, Trump’s incoming border czar, has vowed to swiftly enact the agenda and carry out the executive orders signed by Trump on his first day in office.
