President Trump has shared an update on the progress of his tariff negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In a post on Truth Social, he revealed that Trudeau contacted him following public statements from the two leaders earlier in the week regarding tariffs between the U.S. and Canada.

“Justin Trudeau, of Canada, called me to ask what could be done about tariffs,” Trump said. He went on to emphasize his motivation for establishing tariffs, including the security of the U.S. northern border and the reduction of illegal immigration and drugs flowing into the country from Canada.

“I told him that many people have died from Fentanyl that came through the Borders of Canada and Mexico, and nothing has convinced me that it has stopped,” Trump said.

The post comes after Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico on Tuesday. Trump has stated the tariffs are a response to failures to secure their borders with the U.S. and reign in the trafficking of drugs such as fentanyl.

Trump indicated that the two leaders ended the call peacefully, but also suggested his suspicion that Prime Minister Trudeau was using the issue politically after announcing his resignation earlier this year.

“He said that it’s gotten better, but I said, ‘That’s not good enough.’ The call ended in a ‘somewhat’ friendly manner! He was unable to tell me when the Canadian Election is taking place, which made me curious, like, what’s going on here? I then realized he is trying to use this issue to stay in power. Good luck Justin!” Trump said.

Trump followed up with another post on Truth Social, making it clear that he holds Trudeau responsible for the policies that have resulted in a weak and dangerous border with detrimental results for the American people.

“For anyone who is interested, I also told Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada that he largely caused the problems we have with them because of his Weak Border Policies, which allowed tremendous amounts of Fentanyl, and Illegal Aliens, to pour into the United States. These Policies are responsible for the death of many people!” Trump said.
