Secret Service rushed President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump off the state of the 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner after gunshots were fired.

Both the president and first lady are safe. Shortly thereafter, President Trump posted to Truth Social that he wants to return to the ballroom to deliver remarks.

He also confirmed that the shooter was apprehended by law enforcement.

“Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we “LET THE SHOW GO ON” but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again,” he wrote in a post to Truth Social.

Fox News’ Jacqui Heinrich reported that President Trump never left the venue after the shots, and wants to continue the show. He was reportedly evacuated and placed in a safe location at the venue, with attendees not far down the hall from him as Secret Service worked to determine whether there were any other active threats.

Another unconfirmed report claimed that the supposed shooter reportedly tried to get through the magnetometer with a gun, and shot at a uniformed Secret Service agent, who allegedly returned fire.

Video from the event shows dinner attendees hiding under tables and taking cover after the president’s evacuation.

Fox News’ John Roberts reported from the ballroom that shots were fired, and that he had heard the supposed shooter was engaged by the Secret Service.

Bret Baier of Fox News also said he also heard shots fired, but that they did not appear to originate from inside of the ballroom.

Sources told Fox News the suspected shooter never made it inside the ballroom, was taken into custody and removed from the scene, but this is unconfirmed at this time.

This is a developing story.
