More Republicans remain optimistic about this year’s high stakes midterm elections than people think, with Morning Consult reporting that an impressive 61 percent of GOP voters are “extremely” or “very” enthusiastic about voting in 2022.
Morning Consult’s weekly surveys are conducted among 780 Democrats and 681 Republican voters. This survey also looked at how much impact the conversation surrounding Roe v. Wade will have on voter performance among both Democrats and Republicans in the 2022 midterm election season.
In early May, a shocking draft opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito from the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) was leaked to the press. The opinion appears to foreshadow a resounding defeat for the 1973 court decision of Roe v. Wade, which established protection for abortion on the federal level. The leak has sent shock waves through the pro-abortion community and stirred cautious excitement among proponents of the pro-life platform.
The mainstream media has frequently hinted over the past two weeks that a possible overturning of Roe v. Wade would somehow result in a string of Republican defeats during the 2022 midterm elections due to the perceived outrage from women concerned about abortion. However, polling suggests otherwise, with Republicans maintaining higher levels of enthusiasm than Democrats.
Interestingly, the Morning Consult survey found that Democrat enthusiasm to vote among women had only increased to 51 percent following the leaked draft opinion from SCOTUS.
GOP voter turnout has been tremendous so far, with Trump-backed candidates maintaining a 58-1 primary victory record after this week’s primary races in Nebraska and West Virginia. It’s a good indication of the victories on the horizon for the Republican Party across the country as midterm election races heat up.
