President Donald Trump is maintaining a huge lead over a field of GOP primary candidates heading into the 2024 presidential election. The latest data from Morning Consult’s 2024 GOP Primary Tracker showed on Tuesday that Trump is firmly in command of the primary race by 16 points.
Their poll found that among potential GOP primary voters, 47 percent preferred President Donald Trump as the 2024 presidential nominee for the Republican Party, while 31 percent preferred Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla.
Former Vice President Mike Pence netted 7 percent of support, while former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley managed to snag 3 percent of support.
Haley announced her candidacy for U.S. president on Tuesday, stating it was “time for a new generation of leadership.”
As reported by RSBN, Haley’s decision to run for president contradicts her previous promise to hold off on making a bid for the White House if President Trump was running at the same time.
Haley previously served as the Republican governor of South Carolina before her time working with the Trump administration as a U.N. ambassador. Haley publicly turned on the 45th president following the “insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
According to The Hill, Haley accused Trump of turning the American people against each other in the wake of the chaotic 2020 presidential election. She said, “His actions since Election Day will be judged harshly by history.”
Haley’s comments about President Trump are unlikely to gain her any points among MAGA voters.
Gov. Ron DeSantis is the only other GOP candidate to manage to net double-digit support among GOP voters, but he still trails significantly behind Trump. DeSantis has also not yet officially announced a presidential bid.
When asked if he was planning to run for president at a press conference on Tuesday, DeSantis laughed and replied, “Wouldn’t you like to know!”
So far, Haley is the only GOP leader other than President Trump who has announced their candidacy for president in 2024.
