President Donald Trump suggested this week that he may hold a press conference centered on reading the full text of the preliminary peace deal with Iran.
The president attended the G7 Summit in France this week. While speaking with the press – and joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent – he noted that he would “not only release it, I’ll probably have a press conference and read it to you word by word so that the press covers it accurately because it’s a very important document!”
President Trump criticized the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was the nuclear deal signed with Iran during the Obama administration. President Trump pulled the United States out of that deal in 2018, during his first term in the White House.
“It is the worst agreement,” Trump said of the Obama-era deal. “That was a road to a nuclear weapon. Mine is a wall against a nuclear weapon.”
The details of the potential deal with Iran have been scarce so far. During his first day at the G7 Summit, President Trump spoke about the deal and said more information about it would be released “pretty soon.”
“…I want it to be released because it’s a very powerful document,” he noted. “It’s not like the Obama document, which was just a terrible document…I would say…sometime after Friday.”
Importantly, President Trump projected confidence that the Strait of Hormuz – an integral shipping channel in the Middle East that has stymied the free flow of energy for more than 100 days amid war – could be open as soon as this week.
“The Strait is already partially opened – as you know, they’re doing a little hunting for a couple of mines that they’ve already found,” he remarked.
The president warned on Tuesday that if Iran would “suffer unbelievable consequences” if they were to violate the presumed agreement, in which they are required to stop pursuing nuclear weaponry.
“Not just a little bit, like, I won’t even tell you the consequences,” he remarked. “…With that being said I hope we have a very good relationship, but the biggest thing is, they will not have a nuclear weapon.”
