Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., scalded the Biden administration at a press briefing on Thursday for considering a federal ban on gas stoves.
“When we say don’t tread on Florida or let us alone, we mean that, including on your gas stoves,” said DeSantis. Cheers and applause from audience members filled the room at the closing of the statement.
The pushback is in response to an assertion made by Commissioner Richard Trumpka Jr. following a report produced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission that demonized gas stoves. “This is a hidden hazard,” said Trumpka. Commissioner Trumpka told Bloomberg that all impactful measures are within consideration. “Any product that can’t be made safely can be banned,” stated the commissioner.
The proposal by the Biden administration lit a fire underneath Americans that depend on their gas stoves for cooking. “I know many people who cook a lot who do not want to part with their gas stoves,” said DeSantis. Additionally, the Florida governor referred to the number of Floridians who depend on gas stoves during power outages.
“I mean, imagine how many people, had the hurricane come through, didn’t have power right away, but were able to turn on (gas stoves).” Continuing, Gov. DeSantis highlighted that this is a dangerous road to follow, but that this is “exactly” what the Biden administration wants to do.
Consequently, the Biden administration is feeling the heat after receiving much opposition to the proposed ban, therefore, Biden officials are walking back their intentions. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chair, Alexander Hoehn-Saric, responded to the uproar by saying “To be clear, I am not looking to ban gas stoves and the CPSC has no proceedings to do so.”
As the “narrative machine” shifts, Gov. DeSantis says he is “going to stand up” for people to have the right to choose how they cook.
