Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., pledged Friday to continue fighting to defend the right to life after the Supreme Court delivered a groundbreaking decision on abortion.

On Friday, the Supreme Court announced the overturning of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. As a result, each state will have the ability to determine its own laws and regulations on abortion.

“The prayers of millions have been answered,” said DeSantis in reaction to the Supreme Court’s landmark decision.

DeSantis stated, “For nearly fifty years, the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited virtually any meaningful pro-life protection, but this was not grounded in the text, history or structure of the Constitution.”

“By properly interpreting the Constitution,” continued DeSantis, “The Dobbs majority has restored the people’s role in our republic and a sense of hope that every life counts.”

The governor pledged, “Florida will continue to defend its recently-enacted pro-life reforms against state court challenges, will work to expand pro-life protections, and will stand for life by promoting adoption, foster care and child welfare.”

At least 13 states have already passed “trigger bans” to outlaw abortion based on the Supreme Court’s favorable ruling in the defense of the unborn. Multiple other states are prepared to pass additional laws to limit abortion and protect the right to life.

According to The Hill, Florida’s new law restricting abortions at 15 weeks of pregnancy is set to take effect next week.

The Supreme Court’s decision has been met with celebration from pro-life supporters, who have pushed for a reversal of Roe v. Wade for nearly 50 years. As DeSantis explained, “By properly interpreting the Constitution, the Supreme Court has answered the prayers of millions upon millions of Americans.”
