Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., has filed a bar complaint against New York State Attorney General Letitia James for the way she has handled President Donald Trump’s civil fraud suit, accusing her of “shameful” behavior and undermining public trust in the legal process.
On Monday, Rep. Stefanik wrote, “It is evident that Attorney General James violated fundamental principles of fairness and impartiality by engaging in a relentless lawfare campaign against President Trump, marked by over 50 prejudicial comments on social media during just the first five weeks of the trial.”
Rep. Stefanik, a staunch advocate of President Donald Trump, accused James of being on an “explicit mission since she announced her run to go after President Trump.”
As reported by RSBN, AG James has been documented attacking President Trump on the campaign trail preceding the case against the president, calling him “illegitimate” and vowing to be a “real pain in the ass.”
Rep. Stefanik stated that this behavior “not only undermines the integrity of the legal process but also violates the Rules of Professional Conduct to which James, as a licensed attorney, is bound.”
In her bar complaint, Stefanik further noted that while Americans have the right to express their opinions freely, attorneys “are held to a higher standard due to their unique role as officers of the court.”
She alleged that James’s behavior was a “breach of her professional responsibilities” and argued that it undermined “the public’s already eroding trust in our legal institutions.”
Last month, closing arguments in the civil fraud suit wrapped up in New York under the supervision of Judge Arthur Engoron, who has not yet issued a ruling in the case. Per RSBN, the 45th president stated that “they don’t have any facts – they don’t have any evidence against us.”
James is seeking a staggering $370 million fine against Trump and a lifetime ban from engaging in the New York real estate business if he is convicted in the fraud case, NBC News reported.
Rep. Stefanik made a compelling argument in her official bar complaint, explaining the following:
“Despite her clear bias, Ms. James has launched frivolous investigations and lawsuits against President Trump, his family, and his businesses. Ms. James also prejudged evidence she had not seen and called for criminal indictments on that basis. It should go without saying that the abuse of an attorney’s official position—especially an elective office—to pursue a personal vendetta violates the most basic ethical precepts.”
