The FBI confirmed on Monday that it is investigating allegations that an Iranian-backed group hacked the Trump campaign.

The Iranian group allegedly accessed campaign documents to interfere with the presidential election.

“We can confirm the FBI is investigating this matter,” the FBI told the Washington Post in a statement.

The information breach reportedly included vetting information about vice presidential running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance. The details were sent to multiple political outlets, including Politico and The New York Times.

The hacker claimed they had a “variety of documents from legal and court documents to internal campaign discussions.”

“I suggest you don’t be curious about where I got them from. Any answer to this question, will compromise me and also legally restricts you from publishing them,” the hacker said, according to Politico.

President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to share the news with his followers.

“We were just informed by Microsoft Corporation that one of our many websites was hacked by the Iranian Government – Never a nice thing to do!” Trump said. “They were only able to get publicly available information but, nevertheless, they shouldn’t be doing anything of this nature.”

“Iran and others will stop at nothing, because our Government is Weak and Ineffective, but it won’t be for long,” he continued. “What Iran doesn’t realize is that I will make the World a better and safer place, and that’s good for them, also!”

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung also released a statement following the hacking incident.

“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,” Cheung said, according to Politico.

“On Friday, a new report from Microsoft found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a ‘high ranking official’ on the U.S. presidential campaign in June 2024, which coincides with the close timing of President Trump’s selection of a vice presidential nominee,” he added.

The Iranian government has denied any involvement in the hacking incident.

“Urgent: representation at the United Nations,” the post stated.

“We deny allegations regarding hacking of the election campaign of presidential candidate Donald Trump,” it added.
