First Lady Melania Trump made history on Thursday by launching an innovative financial resource aimed at helping America’s foster youth get a head start in life.
“For the first time, children in foster care will have access to a dedicated savings and investment vehicle, ‘Fostering the Future Accounts,’” she said during a special ceremony announcing the implementation of this initiative, held at the White House.
The accounts, according to the Office of the First Lady, were designed by Mrs. Trump and the U.S. Department of the Treasury and authorized by the signing of last year’s landmark legislation, the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
“Fostering the Future Accounts give foster children the same chance for asset ownership and long-term well-being as every other American child,” said the First Lady. “By investing in our foster youth now, we help strengthen America’s workforce, communities, and economic future. Ownership turns the principle of individual liberty into sustainable reality.”
According to the First Lady, 23 American governors have already pledged to set up “Fostering the Future Accounts” in their respective states. Those with accounts will be able to access these investment accounts when they turn 18.
During her remarks, Mrs. Trump called on all 50 states to implement the accounts for American foster youth.
“Let’s elevate America’s children above politics,” she said.
The First Lady’s initiative echoes the launch of the U.S. Treasury Department’s “Trump Accounts,” which are slated to roll out in July for children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. These accounts will be seeded with $1,000 by the federal government, per RSBN, and parents or guardians will be able to contribute annually to those accounts as the children grow up.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hearkened to the legacy of Alexander Hamilton, a Founding Father who served as the nation’s very first Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.
“Before he became America’s first and most iconic Treasury Secretary, Alexander Hamilton was an orphan,” Bessent said. “Sustained by little more than a belief that his origins need not define his fate.”
He added, “Today, in the place where Hamilton’s legacy surrounds us, we are extending the reach of this institution to the young people his wife devoted herself to defending. We are affirming that the American dream belongs to every child. And because of the president and Mrs. Trump, through her Fostering the Future Initiative, we are equipping more children to claim their rightful share of it.”
