Former Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Mark Teixeira officially launched his candidacy for Congress, announcing that he is “ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”

The former first baseman and three-time MLB All-Star is running for the open seat in Texas’s 21st Congressional District to succeed incumbent Rep. Chip Roy, who himself is seeking the office of the Texas Attorney General.

“As a proud Texan and lifelong conservative who loves our country, I’m ready to fight for the principles that make Texas strong and America exceptional,” Teixeira wrote Thursday in a campaign statement. “It takes teamwork to win, and I’m ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”

He continued, “It takes teamwork to win, and I’m ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”

The athlete also commended the outgoing Rep. Roy for representing the district “with unwavering courage,” leaving what he described as an “impressive legacy of principled conservative leadership.”

“I’m running to ensure District 21 remains prosperous and free for generations to come,” Teixeira wrote.

The All-Star played 14 seasons during his career in the major leagues, starting with the Texas Rangers in 2003, and later playing for teams like the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels, and New York Yankees, Fox News reported.

Retiring in 2016, he and his wife relocated to Texas in 2021, where they raised a family while supporting Christian ministries and exploring business opportunities, according to NBC.

The race is set to take place in November 2026, its primary scheduled for March, per Fox News.
