Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., previewed the upcoming transmittal of impeachment articles against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a Thursday Fox News op-ed.

Mayorkas was impeached in February along party lines for high crimes and misdemeanors after the committee concluded its lengthy investigation into the secretary’s actions and “produced a compelling body of evidence.”

A statement released by the committee on Thursday revealed that the “House will officially transmit the articles to the Senate on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.”

Green wrote, “The seriousness of the charges should compel the Senate to perform its constitutional duty, conduct a full impeachment trial, convict Secretary Mayorkas, and ultimately remove him from office.”

He argued that Mayorkas has “refused to comply with the law” despite being “bound by the Immigration and Nationality Act to detain inadmissible aliens arriving at the border.” He continued, writing, “He has refused to follow that clear command, however, instead directing the release of millions of inadmissible aliens into the United States.”

Green recalled recent remarks made by the deputy patrol agent for the Yuma Sector of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) during an interview with the committee. The agent said that “between 65 to 70%” of Yuma Sector encounters since Biden took office “had been released.”

The congressman noted that Mayorkas “admitted earlier this year that roughly 85% of migrants were being released instead of detained.” He highlighted the secretary’s abuse of “his very limited statutory parole authority that allows him to grant parole only on a case-by-case and temporary basis.”

Green wrote that Mayorkas had “overseen more than 1.7 million paroles in just three years” with the creation of “categorical mass-parole programs contrary to the clear text of the law.”

Green blasted the Senate for refusing to vote on the House-passed “Secure the Border Act,” which has been sitting on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s desk since May 2023.

He torched the upper chamber’s recent “ill-fated proposal filled with provisions that experts argue would have effectively legitimized crisis levels of illegal immigration.”

Green wrote that “Senate Democrats have failed to meet the moment when it comes to ending the crisis and resolving the chaos at our borders.”

He argued that “Congress must make clear to the executive branch that it will not tolerate such blatant disregard for the laws written by this body.”

Green concluded the op-ed with a powerful statement, writing, “Leader Schumer has no excuse – hold the trial, render a verdict, and hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable.”
