GOP lawmakers to probe ‘plummeting’ ICE arrests amid Biden border crisis

Republicans on the House Oversight and Reform Committee are launching an investigation to examine the cause of “plummeting” arrest rates of illegal immigrants by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Ranking member, James Comer, R-Ky., and Michael Cloud, R-Texas, senior member on the Economic and Consumer Policy Subcommittee, requested data highlighting the reason for the drop off of “immigration enforcement,” and deportations from the country.

The lawmakers are concerned that ICE employees have been ordered to “ignore the law,” and cease enforcement of United States immigration laws.

One might assume the drop-off of apprehended illegals is due to a low crime rate, but the numbers say otherwise. In data released by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, nearly two million illegal aliens were apprehended at the southern border in 2021.

According to the duo, the weak immigration policies of the Biden administration are incentivizing crime and wrecking “border communities.”

Moreover, the Biden administration’s policies are “enriching criminal cartels who profit from human smuggling and drug trafficking,” wrote the congressional members.

Although ICE has not been defunded, a wish list item of the radical left, the agency was restricted in September of 2021, by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from carrying out its full operations. The curtailed duties resulted in a 60 percent reduction of arrests and removals.

Reps. Comer and Cloud concluded that the actions of DHS are “alarming,” especially considering the present chaos taking place along the southwest border.

Considering the mismanagement of ICE, “it appears the Biden administration is abolishing its mission by memorandum,” stated the letter.

To better understand the “dramatic drawdown,” of interior enforcement, committee Republicans are requesting all guidance letters from the DHS to ICE. The Committee on Oversight and Reform is the chief investigative committee of the United States House of Representatives.
