The Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has launched a civil investigation into the conditions of the entire Colorado prison system to ensure that those who are incarcerated are being “afforded their rights under the U.S. Constitution and federal law.”

The investigation, led by DOJ Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon, comes after “multiple reports of unconstitutional and legally insufficient carceral conditions,” she said.

According to the DOJ, the division “has not reached any conclusions regarding allegations in this matter.” The investigation will look into the conditions within facilities operated by the Colorado Department of Youth Services and the Colorado Department of Corrections.

This federal probe comes just days after President Donald Trump voiced his criticism of Colorado Governor Jared Polis (D) over the ongoing incarceration of Gold Star mother Tina Peters.

As reported by RSBN, Peters was convicted last summer of multiple charges related to her past position as a Mesa County Clerk, including violation of duty and failure to comply with the Secretary of State, as well as first-degree official misconduct.

She was sentenced to a total of nine years of incarceration for the “breach of her own election equipment in 2021,” according to Secretary of State Jena Griswold.

President Trump called Gov. Polis a “sleazebag” for allowing Ms. Peters’ incarceration to continue. “She was convicted for trying to stop Democrats from stealing Colorado Votes in the Election. She was preserving Election Records, which she was obligated to do under Federal Law,” the president argued.

He added, “She has now served more than one year in jail, and has eight years to go. On top of everything else, she is a cancer ‘survivor.’ This lightweight Governor, who has allowed his State to go to hell (Tren de Aragua, anyone?), should be ashamed of himself. FREE TINA!”

According to Tina Peters’ official X page, her “health is not good and deteriorating as we speak.”

As of December 8, her page reported that she had been moved back into solitary confinement. “IS THIS RETALIATION FOR THE PARDON LETTER TO PRESIDENT TRUMP?” the post declared. “…WHAT IS GOING ON? Tina will now be in isolation in filthy conditions for 22 hours per day. Lights on 24/7. No yard time. The only explanation given to her was ‘this is for your safety[.]’”
