Hillary Clinton, a former First Lady and Secretary of State, appeared on Thursday for a closed-door meeting with the House Oversight Committee in Chappaqua, New York – but the proceedings almost immediately got off to a rocky start.
Shortly after the meeting began, conservative commentator and social media influencer Benny Johnson posted a photo, leaked from within the meeting room, of Mrs. Clinton sitting at a table whilst being deposed. The photo was provided by Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., who sits on the committee.
The photo was potentially unauthorized (although Johnson, on X, argued that it was), and the meeting was then paused to determine whether Rep. Boebert’s conduct violated the rules of the private deposition. According to The Independent, Clinton agreed to continue the meeting despite the disruption.
As reported by RSBN, Hillary Clinton’s deposition will be followed by President Bill Clinton’s testimony on Friday. Both testimonies are centered on the two leaders’ prior relationship with the late and disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Interest in Epstein’s potential network of friends and colleagues has been intense following a recent multi-million document drop, dubbed the “Epstein Files,” from the Department of Justice.
While neither Hillary nor Bill Clinton has been accused of wrongdoing, both seemed somewhat initially resistant to appearing before House committee members.
“Game on in Chappaqua!” wrote Rep. Boebert on X, just before the meeting kicked off. “I’m here with my Oversight colleagues to depose Hillary Clinton under oath in the Epstein probe. After months of dodging subpoenas and facing contempt, no more excuses. It’s time for ANSWERS!”
House Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., told reporters before the deposition began, “We worked for six months to get the Clintons to come in, and then they acted like they were going to come in, and then they didn’t show up, and obviously we moved to hold the Clintons in contempt…it is a bipartisan investigation. The American people have a lot of questions.”
He emphasized that “no one is accusing the Clintons of any wrongdoing, they’re going to have due process.”
Comer continued, “But we have a lot of questions, and the purpose of the whole investigation is to try to understand many things about Epstein – how did he accumulate so much wealth? How was he able to surround himself with some of the most powerful men in the world? Was he an asset for our government or any other government?”
