House Republicans may be preparing to answer President Trump’s call to impeach Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas who has failed to control the border.
According to Axios, the Republican Study Committee, representing more than 150 members, is laying the groundwork to impeach Mayorkas.
A group of 133 Republican lawmakers led by Reps. Jim Banks, R-Ind., and Brian Babin, R-Texas, sent a letter to Mayorkas on Monday, highlighting the disastrous crisis at the border and the lack of effort on his part to tackle it.
The letter addressed to Mayorkas states:
“We write to address your actions to dismantle the security of our nation’s southern border and disregard for the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws. Your actions have willingly endangered American citizens and undermined the rule of law and our nation’s sovereignty. Your failure to secure the border and enforce the laws passed by Congress raises grave questions about your suitability for office.”
In its conclusion, the letter informs Mayorkas that his ineptitude to resolve the border crisis “raises significant questions” about his ability to uphold the oath he swore to ensure America’s security.
House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., speculated on the possibility of impeaching Mayorkas while visiting the southern border on Monday.
“This is his moment in time to do his job. But at any time if someone is derelict in their job, there is always the option of impeaching somebody,” McCarthy said about Mayorkas.
Republicans seem to be taking President Trump’s advice after calling for Mayorkas’ impeachment during a rally in North Carolina earlier this month.
“After we win this November, Republicans should immediately vote to remove Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security from office for his blatant acts of sabotage against the laws of the United States,” Trump told the crowd. “And then, we should continue to work hard until the borders are sealed.”
