The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote Wednesday night on new gun control bills that could pose a serious threat to Americans’ Second Amendment rights if passed.
Following a debate on the floor of the lower chamber of Congress, the House is planning to vote on the strictest gun control measures in recent years.
The Democrat-controlled House will hold the vote on the “Protecting Our Kids Act,” a package of eight different gun control bills, on the same day that testimonies were presented before Congress by the survivors and family members of the recent horrific shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
The “Protecting Our Kids Act” was introduced by the House Judiciary Committee last week in a quick response to the recent mass shootings that have plagued the nation. The bill was approved by the committee along strict party lines.
While the lower chamber is expected to pass this major gun legislation as early as Wednesday night, it is expected to face significant opposition in the Senate, where it would require at least 60 votes to bypass the filibuster, CBS reported.
The Senate is currently split 50-50, with Kamala Harris acting as a tie-breaker. It is unlikely that 10 Republicans would break party lines amid the GOP leadership’s calls to vote against the legislation.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) warned Americans that the House’s proposed gun legislation would outlaw American adults under 21 years old from owning guns, ban magazines with more than 10 rounds, ban multiple gun parts, stop Americans from building their own guns, confiscate legal guns through red flag laws, and mandate guidelines for storing guns.
While the House may have the votes needed to pass this legislation, Senate Republicans have expressed their commitment to protecting the fundamental rights of the Second Amendment and have indicated that the legislation will not pass the Senate. House Republicans have introduced alternative forms of legislation that would protect the Second Amendment and would prevent criminals from obtaining and using guns in future mass shootings.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., released a video message and statement ahead of the House’s vote on gun control. She said, “I’ll be voting no. I’m encouraging every single Republican in D.C., members of the House & members of the Senate to vote no on all of this radical Democrat gun control that has no common sense, is completely useless, & is going to hurt Americans’ right to bear arms.”
As Lucretia Hughes Klucken, whose son was killed by a convicted felon in possession of an illegal gun, told Congress, “Our gun control lobbyists and politicians claim that their policies will save lives and reduce violence. Well, those policies did not save my son.” She added, “We have decades of evidence proving they do not work.”
