With Gov. Ron DeSantis at the helm, Florida parents with children in public school will have a say as to what their children learn.
DeSantis recently signed CB/HB 1467, a bill that gives parents more control over what their children learn in school. Notably, the bill imposes term limits on school board members. Additionally, the bill requires government oversight and approval before school district libraries and classrooms may utilize the material.
Moreover, anyone involved in selecting school district library materials must complete a training program designed by the Florida Department of Education. It also allows parents to object to any proposed material, and school principals will be responsible for ensuring that all school district procedures are properly followed.
The purpose of the bill, like many of the governor’s other bills, is to protect against efforts to indoctrinate children in the state’s public schools and classrooms and to provide parents with transparency when it comes to what their children are learning.
As reported by RSBN, other such bills include the Individual Freedom Act and the Parental Rights in Education bill.
DeSantis strongly believes that parents have a fundamental role in their kids’ education. According to DeSantis:
“We reject those that say, parents not only shouldn’t be involved but there are also some say, parents don’t even have a right to know what is being taught in this, that there are actually some places where you can make serious decisions for these kids and not inform the parents about it.”
Fortunately, with DeSantis in charge, that is not going to happen anytime soon.
Parents should have a say when it comes to what their children are learning. By sending their children to public schools around the state, parents do not simply give schools and teachers the green light to brainwash or indoctrinate their children.
In Florida, this bill, and others like it, provide additional protections against such efforts.
