House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Mike Turner, R-Ohio, released a statement on February 14 announcing that the committee had “made available to all Members of Congress information regarding a serious national security threat.”
Turner concluded the brief statement by urging President Biden to “declassify all information relating to this threat” so that the full Congress, the Biden administration, and allies around the world could “openly discuss the actions necessary to respond to this threat.”
A senior congressional reporter for NBC News, Scott Wong, shared a post on X with information from one of his Democratic sources.
Wong said he was informed that “it was a serious issue that could lead to a destabilizing situation and a national security threat.”
Wong’s source described the issue as a “potential foreign threat,” although he noted that no specific details were disclosed.
During a press conference, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was asked about Turner’s statement.
He told reporters that he was “a little bit surprised” that Turner had released the statement, as he had already scheduled a meeting for February 15 to discuss the issue with the four House members who make up the eight member “Gang of Eight.”
CNN reported that “two sources and a US official” said that the threat was “related to Russia” and that the intelligence was characterized as “very sensitive.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson said Americans should not be alarmed, adding, “We just want to assure everyone steady hands are at the wheel.”
