President Donald Trump met with Argentine President Javier Milei on Thursday ahead of a gala held by America First Policy Institute at his estate in Mar-a-Lago.
Milei became the first foreign leader to meet with Trump since his victory in last week’s presidential election.
During his address at the gala, Fox News reported that Milei congratulated Trump on his win through an interpreter, saying “this has been the greatest political comeback in history, defying the entire political establishment, even at the risk of his own life.”
“There is a silent or rather silent majority that has begun to make itself heard despite the enemies of freedom clinging to power through propaganda, distortion and censorship,” said Milei. “And this is why I would especially like to thank the great Elon Musk for the wonderful job he has been doing to save humanity in communication around the world.”
Trump thanked Milei during his remarks, stating, “And, Javier, I’d like to congratulate you on the job you’ve done for Argentina. Your speech was beautiful, but the job you’ve done is incredible. Make Argentina great again. You know MAGA. He’s a MAGA person.”
Milei previously met Trump in February at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in the Washington, D.C., area, according to the Associated Press. The two leaders met briefly and were photographed together.
During the gala event, Trump revealed that he has selected North Dakota Republican Gov. Doug Burgum as his Secretary of the Interior.
“I won’t tell you his name, it might be something like Burgum,” Trump said. “Actually he’s going to head the Department of Interior, and he’s going to be fantastic.”
“I’ll make a formal announcement tomorrow,” Trump added.
The nomination adds to a growing list of leadership announcements from Trump this week. On Thursday, he announced Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as his pick to lead Health and Human Services.
He also announced former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard as his Director of National Intelligence, along with Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz as his nominee for U.S. Attorney General.
Late Wednesday, Trump also confirmed reports that he is nominating Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio as the Secretary of State. Trump’s appointments began last week when he first announced Susan Wiles as his White House Chief of Staff, making her the first female to hold the position.
