President Trump has officially proclaimed May 2026 as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. In an official statement shared by the White House, Trump reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting health, wellness, and physical fitness among the American people.

“This National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, we celebrate the strength, discipline, and competitive spirit that reflect the American people.  We recognize the values and lessons that sports and fitness instill,” President Trump said. “Above all, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, expanding access to athletic opportunities, and ensuring every American has the chance to compete and succeed.”

President Trump highlighted the importance of sports in American culture and emphasized the benefits of participation. “Sports and fitness are woven into the fabric of American identity, and the greatness that defines our Nation is forged only through hard work, sweat, and an unrelenting demand for success,” President Trump said. “Physical dedication sharpens the mind, steels the will, and produces the kind of character that Americans carry into every aspect of their lives. Citizens who hold themselves to that standard of excellence are capable of meeting any challenge of the world today.”

The establishment of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month aligns with the objectives of the Trump administration and the 2024 campaign theme of “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA), which gained popularity after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. endorsed President Trump.

In July 2025, President Trump signed an Executive Order for the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition and Reestablishment of the Presidential Fitness Test. According to President Trump, the order was intended to prioritize health at a national level and usher in a “Golden Age” of physical fitness for every American, which would be centered around nutrition, exercise and the promotion of youth sports.

President Trump noted the U.S. will host several major sporting events during his second term, including the Presidents Cup, the FIFA World Cup, and the Olympic Games. As part of the 250th celebration of American independence, the Trump administration will also host the Patriot Games, which will feature competitors from each state and territory.

“This month, we are reminded that a country is only as strong as its citizens,” President Trump said. “Encourage all Americans to take steps to ensure they can live healthy and fulfilling lives through regular exercise and the joys of sports — improving the strength, vigor, and success of our Nation along the way.”
