Firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., introduced a bill last week to criminalize “gender-affirming care” for minors.
The bill, which Greene has titled the “Protect Children’s Innocence Act,” would make it a felony to distribute puberty blockers to children or to perform sex-change surgeries on them.
“Under my Protect Children’s Innocence Act, anyone involved in acts of physical mutilation to minors under 18 will be guilty of a felony and can go to jail,” she wrote on Twitter. Greene added, “These procedures for profit permanently disfigure kids before they even know what they want to do when they grow up.”
During an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, the congresswoman stated that, “The whole reason I ran for Congress in the first place is because I’m one of the Americans that are sick and tired of our government allowing the abuse of the American people. But when it comes to ‘gender-affirming care,’ which is really child abuse, this is actually an assault – and it’s child abuse.”
Greene continued, “This practice should never happen. It’s so disgusting and appalling and it’s an embarrassment to this country.” She pointed out that “gender-affirming care” is really “genital mutilation,” that involves giving children puberty blockers, which can result in chemical castration for boys and physical disfigurement for girls.
The Children’s Innocence Act, she said, would implement a Class C felony charge “for any person involved in so-called ‘gender-affirming care.’ That means genital mutilation surgery, that means hormones, that means puberty blockers – anything involving any youth under the age of 18.”
She added that children were “too young” to decide whether to chemically and physically alter their body, and that the ramifications of “gender-affirming” treatments would “affect them for the rest of their lives.”
“You know, I should have every Republican co-sponsor, but unfortunately, I don’t yet,” Greene told Carlson, regarding GOP support for the bill. “…I’m talking to all of my colleagues and urging, because Tucker, let me tell you something: this is a referendum on the Republican Party. When we take back the majority, if the American people elect us, we have a lot of work to do.”
